Milan have confirmed Matteo Gabbia’s return from his loan spell at Villarreal.
“AC Milan can confirm that an agreement has been reached to end Matteo Gabbia’s loan spell at Villarreal CF early. As a result, the player will rejoin the first team today. Welcome back, Matteo,” the Rossoneri said in an official statement on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old spent the first part of the season on loan in Spain, collecting 13 appearances across all competitions.
However, an injury crisis in defence convinced Milan directors to bring the product of the club academy back to Milanello.
Milan are expected to sign another centre-back in the winter transfer window, as confirmed by Chief Scout Geoffrey Moncada on Tuesday.
Vesatile Brest defender Lilian Brassier has been linked with a move to San Siro as the Rossoneri are struggling to reach agreements with Arsenal for Jakub Kiwior and with Barcelona and Aston Villa for Clement Lenglet.
Gabbia will train with his Milan teammates today after returning to Italy on Tuesday night.
“My dream has always been to play for Milan, but I was happy at Villarreal too. I am glad that the club thought of me to help the team,” the Italian defender told Sky Sport Italia.
Gabbia has scored one goal in 51 appearances with he Serie A giants.
