Massara played as a forward in the lower Leagues for the likes of Pavia, Pescara and Palermo in the 1990s.

Obtaining his sporting director’s licence in 2011 with full marks, he was Roma’s sporting director for the 2016-17 campaign and returned to fulfil the role on a caretaker basis after Monchi’s exit in March.

The 51-year-old also worked alongside Walter Sabatini when he was Inter’s technical coordinator between 2017 and 2018.

Massara’s arrival completes a new-look managerial team on the red side of San Siro, with Maldini promoted, his ex-teammate Zvonimir Boban named Chief Football Officer and Marco Giampaolo coming in as Coach.
