“It would be the perfect ending to this week, but we are facing a Lazio side that wants to win after their defeat in Salzburg,” Monchi told Mediaset Premium.

“It is a difficult match, but one that is just as important for us as against Barcelona, as we want to be in the Champions League again next year.

“I think the derby is the best fixture we could have right now, as we cannot afford to still have our minds on Barcelona. Plus it is a big stepping stone to ensure we get to experience nights like that again next season.

“Once we all decided that Edin would not be going to Chelsea and the negotiations would not work out, it was over. He always focused on Roma and had his head 100 per cent on his team, even during a period that was not easy.

“I have always said that money is useful, but hard work is better. I’ve had the opportunity now to work here for a complete year with my collaborators and I’m convinced we’re on the right track.”

Roma had complaints about the referee in the first leg at Camp Nou, while Juventus protested furiously at the penalty awarded to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

“I am a big supporter of VAR and think it ought to be used in all the major tournaments, including the Champions League, Liga, Premier League and others.”
