Milan target Fernandez heading to Benfica

Milan seem to be missing out on another transfer target, as River Plate midfielder Enzo Fernandez is close to Benfica instead.

The summer has been disappointing so far for the Rossoneri on the market, as they are repeatedly linked with players only to then be beaten to the punch.

According to multiple reports including A Bola and Sic Noticias, Benfica have agreed a basic transfer fee with River Plate for Fernandez.

The cost of the operation is €18m to purchase 75 per cent of his contract from the club in Argentina and he would be allowed to remain on loan until the Copa Libertadores has concluded.

The 21-year-old can then sign a five-year contract with Benfica and begin his European playing career.

Other sides who had shown interest in Fernandez were Juventus and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A product of the River Plate youth academy, he scored nine goals and provided six assists in 24 competitive games for the club this season.
