Maresca in pole position to become new coach of Leicester – report

Enzo Maresca is reportedly the leading candidate in Leicester City’s hunt for a new coach according to an exclusive in The Athletic on Thursday afternoon.

The former Parma boss has spent the last season as assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, having also served as coach of the club’s Elite Development Squad between 2020 and 2021, winning the Premier League 2 title in the process.

Between his spells in Manchester, Maresca spent the first half of the 2021-22 season in charge of Parma, although was ultimately dismissed in November with the club languishing outside of the promotion spots.

During his playing days, Maresca featured for the youth teams of Milan and Cagliari, before making his Serie A debut with Juventus in the year 2000. By the end of his career, he had also turned out for Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Malaga, before retiring at Hellas Verona in 2017.

It is now claimed by The Athletic that Maresca is ‘emerging as the frontrunner’ to take over at Leicester following the team’s relegation to the Championship at the end of the season just gone.

Maresca is said to have come across well during the interview process with Leicester and his preferred style of play is similar to that of Guardiola, which has been reported as an enticing prospect to the senior management team at the King Power stadium.
