Manchester City join Chelsea in race for Juventus defender De Ligt

While Sky Sport Italia claim Chelsea are interested in Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, Sportitalia point to Manchester City instead, which could spark a bidding war.

The centre-back has a release clause in his contract that is worth €125m this summer, rising to €140m in June 2023.

He has made comments suggesting that he is not happy with the level of ambition at the club, having finished fourth in Serie A for two years in a row.

Discussions over a contract extension have also hit problems, fuelling reports De Ligt could be sold over the next few months.

Lawyer Rafaela Pimenta met with Juve today to finalise the Paul Pogba transfer, but she also represents De Ligt via Mino Raiola’s agency.

Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Chelsea have made an approach for the Dutch international.

Now Sportitalia via Alfredo Pedullà maintain Manchester City have also stepped forward with a proposal for De Ligt.

Neither of them are so far prepared to get close to the €125m release clause, but Juve may well take it into consideration if the offer reaches €100m.

The Bianconeri paid €85.5m to sign De Ligt from Ajax in 2019.
