Lukaku: ‘Inter is the most important thing’

Romelu Lukaku was on the scoresheet for the 2-0 win away to Roma, but insists ‘Inter is the most important thing’ going into the Champions League semi-final with Milan.

The Belgian pounced on Lautaro Martinez’s assist from a Roger Ibanez howler to seal the scoreline at the Stadio Olimpico after Federico Dimarco’s opener from a tricky angle.

“I am truly happy with the performance from the whole team, we are reaching the top level,” Lukaku told DAZN.

The result allowed them to consolidate fourth place and move five points clear of Roma, while maintaining a two-point gap from rivals Milan.

“We just need to continue like this, it is the most important moment for everyone. We know our situation and must make the most of every opportunity to hurt the opposition.”

It was a hard-fought encounter at the Stadio Olimpico with a lot of fouls and tough tackles.

“I like that, it brings out our desire to win. Today we also saw our maturity, which is how we brought the game home. Now we have to recover and from tomorrow will start to prepare the match against Milan.”

The fact he played all of today’s game against Roma, while Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko were rested, suggests the Belgian will initially be on the bench for that Champions League semi-final. Is his goal a message to Simone Inzaghi?

“Inter is the most important thing. All I need to focus on is helping the team.”

Lukaku is currently only on loan from Chelsea and there have been reports he will be recalled to base by their probable new coach Mauricio Pochettino.
