The former Milan midfielder is expected to replace Jorginho in Italy's midfield against Northern Ireland tomorrow. He made his Italy debut this past November.

"I was watching the TV with my girlfriend when I knew about my first Italy call-up, and I started crying," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"We played against The Netherlands and the coach told me: 'Take the ball and play as you know.' Everybody treated me as I've always been part of the group."

Locatelli has been linked with many top clubs, including Juventus and Manchester City.

"Since I've been at Sassuolo, I've become aware of who I am. I played at Milan, and it was a fantastic experience.

"I don't know if this will be my last season here [at Sassuolo]. I dream of being important for this team and of playing well at Euro 2020.

"De Zerbi has changed me. He's played a crucial part in my development. We clashed sometimes, but he's always believed in me. He wanted me at Sassuolo, and I've always felt his trust.

"It wasn't easy to deal with me. I got angry for silly reasons, and my teammates helped me too.

"The first training session with the Milan senior team was thrilling. I was 16, Allegri and Galli told me I should have trained with them.

"There were Kaka, Robinho, De Jong, I will remember it forever. I will also not forget the signing of my first professional contract.

"Galliani gave me his pen. It was a great emotion."
