Frattesi: ‘Shameful Italy fans jeering Donnarumma’

Davide Frattesi did not hold back in his criticism of Italy fans who were jeering Gianluigi Donnarumma. ‘It is shameful, I have never seen an international player booed by his own crowd.’

This is not the first time that the former Milan goalkeeper has been loudly jeered by his own fans when representing the Azzurri at San Siro.

Despite coach Luciano Spalletti’s appeals and the rest of the crowd trying to drown them out by chanting ‘Gigio, Gigio’, it was painfully clear that a large section of the home crowd was whistling every time Donnarumma had the ball at his feet.

Even with the result against Ukraine in doubt during the 2-1 victory and with the goalkeeper under pressure from opposition strikers, they continued to put petty club considerations above what was good for their country.

“It was honestly shameful,” brace hero Frattesi told Sky Sport Italia.

“I have never seen anything like this, an international player booed by his own crowd. I do not understand why he gets jeered like that, we are representing Italy here.

“I went over, told him he’s great and that we love him, but he doesn’t need it. Donnarumma is a top player, he can handle this easily and just shakes it off.”

Milan fans eager to insult Donnarumma will get plenty of opportunity when Paris Saint-Germain visit San Siro in the Champions League group stage.
