Buffon: ‘Never favourites with Milan’

Gianluigi Buffon warned “Juventus are never favourites against Milan” and history teaches him to expect a tough Coppa Italia Final.

The Coppa Italia Final is in Rome on Wednesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I learned pretty early on that Juventus are never favourites against Milan, all the way from 2003 with a Champions League Final in Manchester,” said the captain in his Press conference.

The Coppa Italia Final is in Rome on Wednesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I learned pretty early on that Juventus are never favourites against Milan, all the way from 2003 with a Champions League Final in Manchester,” said the captain in his Press conference.

“I must say that all these years later, along with my teammates and the club, we’ve had four Finals against Milan, lost two on penalties, won one in extra time and won another on spot-kicks.

“This means games with Milan rarely end after 90 minutes, because they are very balanced. Aside from the technical qualities in the teams, these are matches where everything evens out and I expect the same tomorrow.”

Buffon has barely featured in the Coppa Italia over the years, leaving it to whoever his understudy was at the time, but is expected to start tomorrow.

“If I’m not mistaken, the last Coppa Italia Final I played was in 1999, so more or less 20 years ago. The fact I have the opportunity to play in it as a protagonist is wonderful and very exciting for me.

“I think the role of second goalkeeper has changed a lot over the last six or seven years, at least at big clubs, because they still get 15-20 games per season and have to be reliable.”
