Higuain will need a last-minute fitness test, but is determined to play against his former teammates, despite a back problem that ruled him out of the games with Udinese and Real Betis.

Lucas Biglia, Mateo Musacchio and Mattia Caldara are long-term absentees, while Hakan Calhanoglu, Franck Kessie and Patrick Cutrone are also struggling with ankle injuries.

Cristian Zapata should again be used alongside Alessio Romagnoli in central defence, with Tiemoue Bakayoko and Kessie in midfield.

Diego Laxalt is favourite for the left flank with Suso on the right.

If Cutrone isn’t passed fit, then Samu Castillejo will partner Higuain in a 4-4-2 formation.

Juventus have Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi available again after the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Manchester United, but they are not expected to start.

Surprisingly, Max Allegri tested a line-up in training today without Bonucci, as he is seemingly prepared to leave the former Milan captain on the bench.

It would spare him the inevitable insults from the San Siro crowd, as he spent just one season with the Rossoneri before returning to Turin.

He’d be replaced by Medhi Benatia, who has been linked with a move to Milan in the January transfer window, with Joao Cancelo and Alex Sandro as full-backs.

Sami Khedira, Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi look set for the midfield, with Paulo Dybala supporting Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Probable line-ups

Milan: G Donnarumma; Calabria, Zapata, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Suso, Kessie, Bakayoko, Laxalt; Higuain, Castillejo

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala; Mandzukic, Ronaldo
