Giuseppe Bonomi, the man presenting Inter and Milan’s new stadium plans to the city, discussed the capacity of the stadium and where it may be built.
The Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri are working hard to push for a new home, wanting to leave the historic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which is owned by the city of Milan. The stadium has been designed by Populous and the plans are now slowly moving through the bureaucratic processes.
Speaking on the sidelines of the first participatory inspection of the area where the new home of Inter and Milan should be built, Bonomi discussed the plans for the stadium’s capacity.
“Forward with the San Siro area and a maximum capacity of 65,000 seats.”
He also confirmed the plans to stay in the San Siro area.
“We want to listen to the opinion of the inhabitants and, at the same time, illustrate our proposal. Taking a tour of the area, the need for redevelopment and regeneration is evident.
“We are at a preliminary planning stage, but we are going ahead with our idea. It is clear that, later on, new solutions may emerge, but right now we have to press on with this line.”
Mark Van Huuksloot, Inter’s director of infrastructure development, was satisfied at this stage and was not concerned about the lower capacity of the new stadium.
“We are convinced that we are on the right track and then… look at Roma: what is Friedkin doing?
“Against Salernitana, the actual number of fans present was 62,000, of which 4,000 came from Salerno.”
The current plans see the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza demolished to make space for the new stadium, with the existing structure being changed into a multi-sports facility for the local inhabitants. The goal is to complete construction for the 2027-28 season.
