Boniek attacks Super League trio Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid

UEFA vice-president Zbigniew Boniek did not mince his words when reflecting on the European Super League project, suggesting that three clubs still involved ‘looked like amateurs.’

The Bianconeri were one of the three clubs that continued to push for the Super League project despite the other nine clubs pulling out, refusing to give up on the idea. Fans across Europe expressed their dismay at the idea but it could be relaunched in the near-future.

Speaking to Il Giornale, Boniek criticised Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid for their involvement in the Super League project.

“The Super League already exists and it is the Champions League, revised further. What they wanted to impose overnight, with a telegram, was instead an operation made only to save a mismanagement of funds by a few big clubs.

“A Super League made to divide the money among a select few, without valuing sporting merit. But what if they had done it 40 years ago? Would there have been Eintracht or Red Star?

“I thought that the teams that wanted the Super League were led by super-directors and instead they looked like amateurs.”

The fight between UEFA, FIFA and the Super League project will go to the European Union’s highest court as the bitter battle continues, with neither side willing to back down at this stage.

It’s likely that the fight will continue to rage on until the EU court’s final decision is made, and it’s likely that the project would be re-launched if the Super League trio won the case.
