UEFA vice-president Zbigniew Boniek did not mince his words when reflecting on the European Super League project, suggesting that three clubs still involved ‘looked like amateurs.’

The Bianconeri were one of the three clubs that continued to push for the Super League project despite the other nine clubs pulling out, refusing to give up on the idea. Fans across Europe expressed their dismay at the idea but it could be relaunched in the near-future.

Speaking to Il Giornale, Boniek criticised Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid for their involvement in the Super League project.

“The Super League already exists and it is the Champions League, revised further. What they wanted to impose overnight, with a telegram, was instead an operation made only to save a mismanagement of funds by a few big clubs.

“A Super League made to divide the money among a select few, without valuing sporting merit. But what if they had done it 40 years ago? Would there have been Eintracht or Red Star?

“I thought that the teams that wanted the Super League were led by super-directors and instead they looked like amateurs.”

The fight between UEFA, FIFA and the Super League project will go to the European Union’s highest court as the bitter battle continues, with neither side willing to back down at this stage.

It’s likely that the fight will continue to rage on until the EU court’s final decision is made, and it’s likely that the project would be re-launched if the Super League trio won the case.

  1. I am all for the Super League. Uefa are the actual greedy ones and acting like children because they would lose money if the SL was born. Yhey want to be in control and no-one else. They have fooled fans all over the globe. The SL just needed a better structure. Teams should have been entered on merit number 1 and rhe every year bottom teams get relegated out and nrw teams enter based on some kind of points system. Not purely historical prestige. Man Utd is no long considered an elite club. Despite their history. So they for one should not have been in it in the first place. If the invitational system was better fans would be more accepting, I’m sure.

  2. Boniek is clueless. Want it or not, the ESL will be a reality in the future. UEFA has no business taken a lot of money that they do zero to get

  3. @putuco I absolutely disagree with you. You know nothing about football. Respect to Boniek✌️❤️

  4. @Putuco your are clueless, ESL wont happen- blatter and platini have just been found innocent – Uefa wont allow this to happen/ i do believe platini and blatter are corrupt.

Current slovakian uefa president is doing a great job – Boniek above statement is absolutely correct and a juve fan

  5. How can a football fan support something that will destroy the competitive nature of football. If they were after improving football then they wouldn’t even suggest a competition where they will always be included no matter what. It’s there to improve their bank accounts not football. For naive people who thinks that the SL clubs only need to improve their terms for it then they are delusional at best. Instead of actually trying to suggest something better but did the exact opposite. Sooner or later all of those clubs still in it will be kicked out of CL

  6. Replacing 1 rotten apple with another rotten apple doesn’t improve your lot. That’s what ESL and UEFA are. Take the money from 1 organization and give it to a select few in another organization. No one cares if the ESL happens or not, nor should they because it wouldn’t be an improvement over the current lousy and corrupt system.

  7. Super League is an attempt by emperor Putin (sorry Perez) & his minion Lukasjenko (sorry Agnelli) to steal football & make it their property.
Hopefully it will never hapoen with any if these dictators involved.

Yes, I’m a Juve fan but the Super League project is nothing but a blatant attempt from greedy bastards to steal our football & make it their private property.
    Just say NO.

  8. @Mohammed, if you think Sepp Blatter is innocent, you need to wake up to yourself. The guy is biggest criminal ever involved in the game. You do know he still facing other charges for corruption?!!!
@kaikai, the reason MU was included is for its supporter base. You won’t make any money by having clubs with a small supporter base.

  9. I’m pretty sure we need to play our part as fans of our various clubs. Be an investor to expand your coast if you have the funds to do that and stop being mr.perfect.
the players are meant to complain being the entertainers and not we the fans.

  10. That is why you give out Award to wrong played imagine you turn Ballor D to chi chi Super League must happen

  11. FFP, corruption on all stages and supporting teams like psg and city- this is uefa today.
If we really want to support sport, not the richest, so why not to use the old formula where only domestic winners can play in CL?
If not they should creat the SL. Sorry, but for me as a Juve it was boring to watch for 10 years winning 50-75% games effortless. Whole year I was waiting to see games like vs Milan, Inter, Roma or Lazio and in Europe vs Barca, Real,Utd etc.
SL is like NBA and NBA is fun to watch.

  12. Zbigniew is just another thief on the payroll towing the company line. UEFA and FIFA don’t own football. Teams competing in any competition should get more money from their involvement . The headline act of the show should get the benefit for their out lay and talent not the promoter .

  13. @Homer, yes i do believe blatter is corrupt along with platini – you misread my above message, please re read it and focus on 2nd sentence

  14. Those thst want a super league are those that aren’t real football fans. Football is an inclusive sport for people attending matches across the country. If you want an elitist sport go watch formula one.

  15. ESL is competition not based on merit or sporting performance, but on how big of fanbase the clubs have. The founding clubs wouldn’t want to compete in order to participate. Bigger fanbase would bring more money. No matter how crap MU or Barca play, their fans will still continue to support them and pay to watch them play.
However without ESL, EPL would remain unchallenge commercially for decades to come

  16. The arguments at this point are entirely academic. The ESL will not happen regardless of the outcome of the CEUJ.

A ‘Super Leage’ can’t happen without the majority of the top teams involved. Prem, bundesliga and League 1 clubs wont be involved because theres mechanics involed that the club owners cant surmount, whether that be club ownership models, sport liscences or ‘Legislative bombs’.

If RM, Barca and Juve tried to launch their own league they’d have trouble bribing teams away from the CL. Even if they did manage it more of the ‘Big’ clubs would be in the CL. If the ESL cant model itself as superior to the CL then as a competitor it would split the revenue and everyone would loose out.

The final nail in the ESLs coffin is that the vast majority of Fans, players, FAs, Clubs and Govts dont want it so as a competitor to the CL without the majority of big clubs it would probably get less viewership leading to poorer revenues (the arguable exception being the 3 current rebels who will be hoping that being able to sell their own games live digitally will make an actual ton of cash)

    It aint happening.

  17. We can all enjoy the world cup run by the football Mafia’s in Qatar hosted and paid for by prince Al-Khelaifi for the sole purpose to promote his country. While the clubs that actually pay for the players wages take up to a 50 day break mid season and competitions to please a tiny audience live with lots of $$$$$ in the middle of the dessert. Not a real football fan . What a joke if your buying into that nonsense.
