Why Chiesa can’t play with Juventus U-23 squad during World Cup

Federico Chiesa will be able to use the World Cup break to continuing returning to full fitness with Juventus but he won’t be able to join their Under-23 squad on the pitch.

The Bianconeri are the only club in Italy with a second team, who have recently been renamed to Juventus Next Gen. This team compete in Serie C and some fans hoped that Chiesa would be able to build up his match fitness with the U-23 squad whilst Serie A is on hold for the World Cup in Qatar.

As highlighted by Gianluca Di Marzio, Chiesa cannot play with the Juventus Next Gen squad during the World Cup break due to the rules, which are clear on the matter. Over-23 players can only join the squad if they’ve played less than 50 Serie A matches.

Furthermore, registered first team players are unable to make this jump in the middle of a season, completing ruling out the possibility of Chiesa playing in Serie C with the Juventus Next Gen squad.

As such, the Italian forward will remain in Continassa, working with the Bianconeri staff as he pushes to reach full fitness once again.
