VAR, retaken penalty and controversies: five minutes of madness in Juventus vs. Inter

Inter star Hakan Calhanoglu broke the deadlock from the spot in the first half against Juventus following five minutes of pure madness. Here’s what happened at the Allianz Stadium.

Massimiliano Irrati awarded a penalty kick to the Nerazzurri for a foul of Alvaro Morata on Denzel Dumfries. The referee needed a VAR check to spot Morata’s touch on the Netherland international’s right foot.

Calhanoglu saw Wojciech Szczesny save his penalty kick, but the ball somehow crossed the line on the rebound. Irrati saw a debatable foul from an Inter player and stopped play. The Nerazzurri were furious and protested against the match official who, after a lengthy conversation with VAR referees, decided that the penalty had to be retaken.

Allegri rages during Juventus vs. Inter

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri could not hide his frustration and threw his jacket on the floor while staring at the fourth official.

Replays showed that Matthijs de Ligt had entered the box before Calhanoglu touched the ball. The Dutch defender was the first to get on the rebound after Szczesny’s save. Calhanoglu didn’t miss the second penalty kick, giving the lead to the Nerazzurri before the break.
