‘Totti didn’t need call-up now’

Italian Football Federation chief Giancarlo Abete has hinted that Francesco Totti is indeed in contention for a spot at the World Cup next summer.

Cesare Prandelli commented in naming his squad for October’s closing qualifiers that the Roma veteran could be up for consideration should he continue his form through the season.

For Abete, the fact that Totti was not involved in this month’s internationals is not an indication that he is down the pecking order.

“There is a line of direction from Prandelli that for these last two qualifying matches he has called a large number of players,” Abete explained to Raisport this week.

“For Totti it is not necessary to call him up at the moment, but the indications are that we are dealing with an open group.”
