Thohir: Another chance for Mazzarri

Inter President Erick Thohir has backed Coach Walter Mazzarri to revive Inter’s fortunes – but warns he’ll be evaluated over the next two games.

A Mauro Icardi penalty saw the Nerazzurri take their first win in four games away to 10-man Cesena on Sunday, easing some of the pressure on Mazzarri.

The ex-Napoli Coach had been the subject of much speculation over his future, with some even suggesting the resignation of honorary President Massimo Moratti was down to differences with current President Thohir over this subject.

The Indonesian tycoon however, is willing to give his Coach a little more time.

“You have to analyse the problems of the Coach in a fair way,” Thohir has told Viva Bola.

“We’ll see in the next two games, but changing the Coach during the season is never a good solution. We want to give him another chance.

“There are many rumours about a new Coach, but at Inter we aim for the best Coach.”

The Beneamata have been linked with numerous players in recent weeks, including Andrej Kramaric of Rijeka, but the Nerazzurri President refused to reveal who could be heading to San Siro in January.

“We’re only at round [eight], there’s a long way to go and the season lasts for 38 rounds.

“At the end of November we’ll evaluate the [transfer] market, although there are certain shortcomings we’ve already seen.

“I won’t give the names of any players. We’ll see.

“Inter are a whole new team. There are nine players who have arrived and seven who were sold. Of course this isn’t the easiest thing, because it’s always difficult to make drastic changes in a League like the Italian one.”

Thohir also revealed Inter’s targets for the season, and reveals that the success of Roma under a foreign President in James Pallotta is an inspiration.

“Look at Roma. Where were they three years ago? And this season they’re already in a position to compete for the title.

“Our goal is the Europa League. But if you can reach the Champions League, why not? Let’s hope.”
