Sportiello explains decision behind Milan squad number and sends message to fans – video

New Milan goalkeeper Marco Sportiello reveals he picked No. 57 because his wife and daughter were born on July 5 and that he’s been a Rossoneri fan ‘since birth.’

Sportiello has completed a free transfer from Atalanta and the Rossoneri confirmed his signature on Wednesday morning.

“I’ve been a Milanista since birth, I come from a family of Milan fans, it’s a dream come true and a source of pride. I hope I can repay the trust the club have placed in me,” he told Milan TV in his first interview as a Rossoneri player.

“When I was a kid Sebastiano Rossi was Milan’s goalkeeper. The way he played left its mark on me as a child. I liked the way he carried himself in goal.”

Sportiello, 31, has signed a contract until June 2027 and has chosen the No. 57.

“It refers to July 5, 5/7, both my wife and my daughter were born on this day. Therefore, it’s my number. I like it and I can’t change it,” he said.

“I’ve reached a certain maturity. I spent several years in Bergamo, I went out on loan. I’ve played in Serie B, C2, C1. Apart from Serie B, I’ve experienced practically every division. We could say that this is the final step,” he continued.

Sportiello will reunite with Stefano Pioli becoming the second-choice keeper at San Siro after Mike Maignan.

“Maignan is exceptionally good, one of the best in the world and for me, it will be important to stay close to him and learn,” he said.

“Even if I am 31 I have a few things to learn, I am happy to be working with him and the goalkeeping team.

“I played under Pioli in Florence for one season, I enjoyed my time there, it was a great year. I’ve always kept in touch with the coach. He’s given me a lot. He’s welcomed me in the same way he did in Florence. He was very happy and I am delighted to be back working with him.

“I promise [fans] that I’ll give absolutely everything every day. A big hug to you all, Forza Milan.”
