Nico Gonzalez and Dusan Vlahovic got the goals for Fiorentina’s 2-1 victory, as Torino again were toothless in attack.
Both teams were unlucky in their Week 1 defeats and hoping to build on those performances. Bartlomiej Dragowski was suspended following his red card against Roma, with Sofyan Amrabat injured. Toro were still without Simone Zaza, Vincenzo Millico and Simone Edera, but Andrea Belotti returned to the starting XI after an ankle sprain.
A crowd was back in the Stadio Franchi for the first time in 18 months, so when the 13th minute came, both teams also stopped to join the applause in memory of Davide Astori.
Nikola Milenkovic’s header and a Jose Callejon volley at the back post were well saved, but Nicolas Gonzalez opened the scoring with a fierce left-foot strike from the edge of the area at the near post, set up by Gaetano Castrovilli.
Giacomo Bonaventura couldn’t quite bundle the Gonzalez cross over the line after the restart thanks to a desperate Rolando Mandragora block.
Antonio Sanabria saw his attempt deflected over, but Fiorentina doubled their lead on the counter when Simone Verdi was caught in possession, Bonaventura floating a cross for the wonderful Vlahovic steered header into the far bottom corner.
Toro did get a consolation late on, Sasa Lukic with the inspired through ball for Verdi to fire in first time.
