Saelemaekers: ‘We’re back in the Scudetto race’

Alexis Saelemaekers feels that Milan are back in the title race following the 4-2 win over Empoli.

The Rossoneri were always in control against the Tuscan side this evening, going into the half with a 2-1 lead. Two quick goals from Alessandro Florenzi and Theo Hernandez secured the three points, despite a late consolation goal by Andrea Pinamonti.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the win over Empoli, Saelemaekers first discussed Milan’s December, saying ‘I don’t know. Like all great teams we can have a difficult moment. But I think we showed today that we did well. We’re back in the Scudetto race.’

He touched on the injury crisis currently plaguing the squad but felt confident going into the Christmas break. ‘I think we had a lot of injuries. It was difficult to change squad every week, that’s never good. We didn’t have stability, but I think we’re back to our best level now. Yes, we’re back.’ He highlighted.

Finally, Saelemaekers commented on the team’s training sessions over Zoom and how it’ll be important over the next few weeks. ‘I think a bit of everything. Some physical work, we’ve already done that. I think that will be the case for all the teams. It’s important to keep the rhythm. It will be important to come back and be ready.’ He concluded.

The 22-year-old Saelemaekers, who is contracted to Milan until 2026, has scored one goal and provided two assists in 18 Serie A appearances this campaign.

Milan’s win over Empoli means that they go into the Christmas break only four points behind league leaders and local rivals Inter.
