According to recent updates, Italy international Wilfried Gnonto is close to reaching an agreement with Championship club Leeds United over a new contract extension.
Reports over the summer suggested that Gnonto had been looking for a move away from Elland Road following Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2022-23 season, with Everton thought to be the frontrunners to land his signature.
Gnonto had reportedly submitted a transfer request during the summer window and was briefly exiled from the first team set-up, before returning to training by the end of August.
Other clubs, including the likes of West Ham, as well as Serie A sides Lazio and Roma had also reportedly been interested in bringing Gnonto on board.
However, according to English journalist Ben Jacobs, the 20-year-old has been “extremely professional and focussed” since the summer transfer window and is now close to penning a new deal with Leeds.
Gnonto originally joined Leeds from FC Zurich in the summer of 2024 in a deal believed to be worth €4.5m. He had previously spent most of his teenage years playing for Inter’s youth sides.
So far in 2023-24, Gnonto has appeared in 21 of Leeds’ 28 Championship fixtures, providing one goal and one assist in the process.
