Pirlo reveals reasons behind Fatih Karagumruk move

Andrea Pirlo discussed the reasons behind his move to Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk, underlining that he’d held discussions with a number of clubs.

The 43-year-old Italian become Juventus’ first team coach following the departure of Maurizio Sarri in the summer of 2020. It was his first real experience coaching and he struggled to hit the mark, unable to stop the Bianconeri’s slow decline. He picked up a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana in Turin, but did not create a convincing project, and so was replaced after only one year.

Speaking at a press conference, Pirlo revealed the reasons behind his decision to become Fatih Karagumruk’s head coach.

“For me it is important to start again after a year’s stop. I had many talks with other teams, both in Italy and abroad, but hearing the ambitions of this team convinced me to come here, also because they’re the same ambitions as mine.”

Pirlo will be hoping to restart his coaching career following a tough year in Turin, and moving abroad gives him some space to develop a style and gain some experience of a demanding league.

Fatih Karagumruk finished eighth in the Super Lig this season, giving Pirlo plenty of room for improvement.
