Pioli: ‘Tonali is a starter’

Milan coach Stefano Pioli has said Sandro Tonali has the ‘qualities’ to claim a place in the starting line-up.

The defensive midfielder moved to Milan from Brescia during the summer and has started two games for the Rossoneri in Serie A.

Tonali has played in all four games so far, but only played three minutes in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter after the international break.

Pioli believes the 20-year-old, who recovered from coronavirus ahead of the new season, will get many opportunities during a long season.

“He had a difficult summer,” Pioli told Radio Anch’io. “He’s a player with great prospects, has great qualities and knows how to make the ball move faster.

“For me, he’s a starter. But I’m lucky to have many starters. We are not even set on one single system; we will see along the way.”

Milan currently prepare for their first match in the Europa League group stage against Celtic on Thursday.
