Pioli looks forward to ‘balanced challenge’ between Milan and Tottenham

Stefano Pioli was ready for Milan’s tough clash with Tottenham in the Champions League Round of 16 and spoke highly about his counterpart Antonio Conte.

The Rossoneri finished second in their group behind Chelsea, edging out their spot in the knock-out stages after beating RB Salzburg in their final group game. Milan are still hot on the heels of league leaders Napoli domestically, sitting only six points behind Luciano Spalletti’s side after 13 games.

Speaking in a press conference, Pioli first discussed how it feels to be leading Milan in their Round of 16 game against Tottenham.

“Difficult matches against a strong opponent, coached by a great coach who knows us well. In the Round of 16 it’s unthinkable to find easy opponents, but we will prepare it in the best possible way. They will be a challenging opponent, we will play them with our qualities, with confidence.”

He touched on what kind of game he wants the Rossoneri to play against Cremonese tomorrow.

“We have to play well. Matches are prepared with a strategy and we must not be carried away by moments, but we must do what we know how to do.

“The opponent will be determined, but we must be determined too.

“It’s important to finish this part of the season as well as possible. I expected a balanced league, unthinkable, however, a Napoli like this.”

The Milan coach spoke about the Champions League Round of 16 draw.

“Unbeatable and perfect teams do not exist. We want to play to pass the round, if we have reached this level it is because we have value and depth. Milan’s numbers against the English are historically negative, we must work to reverse the trend.”

Pioli discussed the possible return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in time for the Tottenham clash.

“We all hope that Zlatan can return with us as soon as possible, his recovery is progressing well. Then we’ll see in February.

“In the Champions League it’s when you get there that counts, there’s still too much time left, we have to be focused for tomorrow.”

He gave his thoughts on Spurs coach Conte.

“He’s a great coach, who has won a lot everywhere. He gives a clear identity and a great mentality to his team.

“Tottenham is very compact and tidy with very strong individuals, like Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Perisic, with many who know Milan and Italian football. On paper I think it could be a balanced challenge.”

The Rossoneri coach touched on the differences between the Premier League and Serie A.

“The level of the Premier League is very high, but now there are also three Italian teams. We will play the first leg at home and it will be a factor, we will have to do well.”

Finally, Pioli discussed the issues that need to be fixed in Milan’s defence.

“We need more focus and cooperation. Talking on the pitch is important. The goal against Spezia is blatant, we were in superiority and it’s a question of communication, of paying attention to every single detail.

“We cannot be impervious, but more attention would help us. We have the ability to score goals, not conceding anything would help us win.”
