Napoli breeze by in Benevento

Napoli survived a couple of scares to conquer neighbours Benevento 2-0 thanks to a magical Dries Mertens lob and Marek Hamsik goal.

The Partenopei retained their status at the top of the Serie A table, despite the pressure put on them by Juventus crushing Sassuolo 7-0 this afternoon.

Lorenzo Insigne’s chip was denied by the crossbar, but Mertens got it just right with a moment of sheer magic from the tightest of angles – similar to the one he scored against Torino last season.

Lorenzo Insigne’s chip was denied by the crossbar, but Mertens got it just right with a moment of sheer magic from the tightest of angles – similar to the one he scored against Torino last season.

Marek Hamsik doubled their lead straight after the restart, as Napoli pounced on a heavy Lorenzo Venuti touch.

There were a few chances for Benevento, and they were even awarded a penalty for Kalidou Koulibaly’s clumsy tackle only for it to be revoked via VAR due to an earlier offside position.

The biggest scare came in the final minutes, when Mertens sprained his ankle on a crunching challenge from behind and limped off the field.
