Riccardo Montolivo is happy to have been given the keys to the Milan midfield by boss Massimiliano Allegri.

The Italian international joined the Diavolo in the summer on a free transfer once his contract at Fiorentina expired.

After being used in a variety of ways by Allegri, he’s now a key figure in the middle of the park for the Rossoneri.

“As a playmaker I get to play a lot of balls,” the former Atalanta man told Milan Channel.

“Some teams like to man mark me during the game, I know that, but I like playing in the role I have been given at Milan.

“It allows me to be at the centre of the game, I have to control the game and it is possibly more important than the attacking element.

“I just try to create the move that will lead to an attack.

“It is a crucial role and I know I cannot make mistakes – I have to play with confidence.”

The 28-year-old has scored two goals in 20 League games so far this season. He’s also played in four Champions League encounters.
