Bologna assistant manager Emilio De Leo reveals Sinisa Mihajlovic was ‘very proud, pleased and moved’ at the comeback win over Inter. ‘We didn’t like some of the speculation about us.’
Mihajlovic watched from his hospital room where he is undergoing treatment for leukaemia, having already beaten the illness in 2019 with a bone marrow transplant.
He has kept in constant contact with his staff and players via video link and called in after this evening’s 2-1 victory.
Serie A | Bologna 2-1 Inter: Radu howler is a Scudetto gift for Milan
“He congratulated the squad and confessed how much he really cared about this result,” De Leo told Sky Sport Italia.
“We didn’t like some of the speculation about us and how Bologna would approach this game, so the coach absolutely will not allow for any lack of professionalism. Nobody should dare put that up for debate.”
Bologna are comfortably mid-table and technically have nothing more to play for, but they are now unbeaten in five games, holding Milan and Juventus to draws before beating Scudetto contenders Inter.
They had gone behind to an Ivan Perisic opener, but Marko Arnautovic’s header and a Nicola Sansone tap-in after Ionut Radu’s howler turned it around for the shock result.
“Before the game, we told each other that we wanted to make our coach happy and fight for him. He was very proud, pleased and moved at the performance from his lads.”
Inter are now two points behind Serie A leaders Milan, although the Rossoneri also have the advantage in head-to-head records, so technically the gap is three points.
