Mihajlovic apologises after ’embarrassing’ Bologna defeat

Sinisa Mihajlovic apologised to Bologna fans after their shock 5-4 home defeat to Ternana in the Coppa Italia. ‘It was embarrassing.’

The newly-promoted Serie B side had been 5-1 up at the Stadio Dall’Ara after 54 minutes, despite also missing a penalty.

The late Bologna comeback was not enough and they crash out of the competition in the First Round.

“It was embarrassing for everyone and we must apologise to the fans and the club,” said a visibly furious Mihajlovic.

“With all due respect for Ternana, we can’t lose like that. Unfortunately, we can’t turn back time now, we are out of the Coppa Italia and hope this will serve as a wake-up call, because we need to be concentrated.

“It’s hard to explain what happened, because we work so much on defensive movements, but there was a complete lack of concentration. We conceded five goals far too easily.

“It’s just not possible for us to lose like that.”

Bologna director Walter Sabatini also commented on the official club website and made a confession.

“There was a genuine chance that I would interrupt my time at Bologna, and I often asked myself whether I am truly useful to this club.

“However, after a game like this, it’s not possible to leave. I can only apologise to the fans and the President for a result like this. We’ve invested a lot this summer, so it’ll be difficult to intervene on the transfer market again. More than anything we need to intervene on the mentality of the players.”
