Newly-promoted Serie B side Ternana caused a huge shock by beating Bologna 5-4 at the Stadio Dall’Ara and they had been 5-1 up while missing a penalty, so will face Venezia next in the Coppa Italia.

It was a shock start, as Jerdy Schouten gave the ball away cheaply and Davide Agazzi pounced with a precise angled drive into the near bottom corner from outside the box.

The Ternana pressing worked again moments later with Annan – a late addition to the starting XI after Lorenzo De Silvestri pulled out – bringing down Alfredo Donnarumma for the penalty. However, Donnarumma angled the spot-kick too much and clipped the upright, a real let-off for the hosts.

Bologna didn’t take the hint and went 2-0 down to a free Donnarumma header, as Annan was again stranded in defence.

Riccardo Orsolini and Marko Arnautovic had chances before Soumaoro back-heeled the ball into the path of Nicolas Dominguez to fire in.

The excitement didn’t last long, as moments later a cross found Danilo Peralta again fairly unmarked to volley home from 12 yards.

Dominguez bundled into the back of Cesar Falletti at the dawn of the second half for another Ternana penalty. Unmoved by the earlier miss, Falletti decided to convert this one with a Panenka chip.

Bologna crumbled amid the jeers of their home fans and Peralta made it 5-1 with a stunning strike from distance that bounced in off the inside of the upright.

Arnautovic at least managed to score on his Bologna debut, tapping in the Riccardo Orsolini pull-back from six yards and moments later Roberto Soriano got in front of his marker to flick in a deflected cross for 3-5 with the outside of his boot.

A desperate fingertip save kept out Orsolini’s daisy-cutter and Dominguez was brought down for a penalty, which Orsolini converted for 4-5.

It should’ve been 5-5 at the 88th minute, but Musa Barrow forced two tough saves in quick succession and in stoppages Antony Iannarilli out-did himself with a double block on Sydney van Hooijdonk and Matias Svanberg.
