Meret: ‘Glad to be back on the pitch’

Alex Meret was glad to be “back on the pitch” making decisive saves for Napoli in the 3-0 Europa League win over RB Salzburg.

Arkadiusz Milik, Fabian Ruiz and an own goal sealed the scoreline, but Meret made three excellent saves to prevent a costly away goal.

“It was a good game, especially in the first half, as we put it on track with an aggressive start and two early goals,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a good game, especially in the first half, as we put it on track with an aggressive start and two early goals,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia.

“We ran too many risks in the second half, but it was important to keep a clean sheet and we fought hard. I am happy with my performance and that of the team.”

This was the perfect response for Meret to Sunday’s defeat to Juventus, which saw him sent off after 25 minutes for a last man tackle on Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It was really disappointing on Sunday to leave my teammates down to 10 men, so it was important for me to come back on the pitch and do what I can to help Napoli.

“One must always think about the future and not the past. We all shook that off and focused on this game. I’ve always said that I will work day by day to improve and then the rest will come from there. It’s always an honour to receive a call from Italy.”
