Walter Mazzarri believes his Torino side are on their way towards ‘taking on anyone’ after an encouraging start to the season.

Toro followed up a last-gasp defeat to Roma with a comeback draw at Inter and a 1-0 win against SPAL, prompting Mazzarri to warn the Granata were ‘developing character’.

“Unfortunately in this world we’re used to looking only at results,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia

“As for myself, I saw three good performances, if not very good in some cases. We’ve not been able to play at the same level for 90 minutes, but we’ve made it difficult for two great teams like Inter and Roma.

“We had a good game against SPAL and were only guilty of not killing the game off sooner because an incident can change the result at the death.

“However, I’m happy with how this group have grown since July 6. I’ve been given some reasons to be happy and I have the feeling that this team are developing character, which will let them take on anyone.

The former Watford boss then reserved special praise for goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu, who is back in the Italy squad.

“I think players have to do what he’s doing and learn from such an excellent goalkeeper,” he added.

“I hope he keeps going like he has, as well as the others. I think the real secret is this: when a team develop character then results follow.”
