Marotta: ‘Inter to meet Dimarco for contract extension, Lukaku is the past’

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta reveals the Nerazzurri will soon sit down with Federico Dimarco to discuss a contract extension and insists Romelu Lukaku ‘belongs to the past.’

The Nerazzurri director spoke to Radio Anch’Io Lo Sport Monday morning following Inter’s 1-0 win over Empoli. Simone Inzaghi’s men are the Serie A leaders with five wins in the opening five games.

“Life is made of dreams and reality and the reality is that we want to win the Scudetto to put the second star on our chest, while Europe is a dream that almost came true last year,” said Marotta, as quoted by Gazzetta.

“We are obliged to give our best for all the targets.”

Dimarco scored the winner in Empoli and Marotta didn’t hide his satisfaction for the defender’s performances. The Italian left-back has one goal and three assists in five Serie A appearances this season.

“Dimarco proves the sense of belonging towards the club, we are happy and proud,” said Marotta.

“He keeps improving and he is still very young. We’ll soon meet to discuss a contract extension.”

The 25-year-old is a die-hard Inter fan and his contract with the Benamata expires in June 2026.

There was also bad news in Empoli on Sunday as Marko Arnautovic was forced off the pitch due to a severe muscle injury.

“We are sorry for Marko’s injury because he’s settled in well, but I am confident Inzaghi will make the right adjustments,” argued Marotta, who then went on to praise the Nerazzurri coach: “Today, Inter are his team, he is the leader and players follow his instructions.”

Lastly, Marotta was asked his thoughts on Romelu Lukaku, who has already scored three goals in four appearances with Roma. The Belgian striker didn’t reply to Inter’s calls last summer when the Nerazzurri were close to completing his signing from Chelsea.

“We were left disappointed because we had a warm relationship, but we were good at finding alternatives,” noted Marotta.

“He belongs to the past, the football world is strange and we must adapt to what happened. Inter continue to look ahead.”
