Maran: ‘Cagliari confident with Inter’

Rolando Maran praised Cagliari’s tactical approach and confidence in possession at San Siro. “We came here with great character.”

The Sardinians fought back for a point against Inter with Radja Nainggolan’s deflected strike, after Lautaro Martinez had been allowed a free header on Ashley Young’s cross.

“We came here to Milan with great confidence and character, keeping the majority of possession,” the coach told DAZN.

“We came here to Milan with great confidence and character, keeping the majority of possession,” the coach told DAZN.

“It was a difficult period we went through in the last couple of months, but we found ourselves again and now feel even stronger than before. You can already see the difference in the performances.”

Cagliari lost here 4-1 in the Coppa Italia on January 14, but this was a very different approach from Maran.

“I adjusted our tactics to a 3-5-2 so we could cover more width, make it difficult for their strikers and block their passing channels. When we had the ball, the intention was to shake off the Inter pressing game, making them work harder.

“It was crucial that we avoided a ‘slow death’ of being under constant pressure, and it worked.”
