Tavecchio, who is favourite to assume the vacant presidency of the FIGC, has courted controversy during his candidacy after being quoted making racist and sexist remarks.

In an interview with La Repubblica, Malago, who himself is President of Italy’s Olympic Committee, said Tavecchio’s plans were not financially viable.

“Tavecchio’s program is bold and innovative,” he said. “Though I told him that I will not be able to implement it. I said that there would be too many bills to pay.

“I have told him that his ideas are not reconcilable with these bills.

“He swore to me that he has no ties to anyone, so let’s see.”

Malago also passed comment on Tavacchio’s rival for the position, Demetrio Albertini, adding that he could not see the former Milan midfielder winning.

“As for Albertini, his candidacy and his victory would be big news in itself. But it is difficult to think of his success.”

Whatever the eventual outcome of the contest, the official is convinced that big changes within Italina football are not far away.

“With this story, which has now become a thriller, I expect a surprise ending. Perhaps before August 11, maybe soon after. Certainly Italian football will be reset.

“I cannot say anything else, except from Wednesday I break from everything and go on vacation. But, with a plan B ready – if I am needed I can return right away to Rome. The sense of responsibility is ahead of everything else.”
