He finally completed his transfer yesterday for €65m plus €10m in bonuses and Manchester United receiving a five per cent cut of any future sale.

After he had been on the verge of a swap deal with Juventus striker Paulo Dybala, Lukaku was asked why he came to Inter.

He finally completed his transfer yesterday for €65m plus €10m in bonuses and Manchester United receiving a five per cent cut of any future sale.

After he had been on the verge of a swap deal with Juventus striker Paulo Dybala, Lukaku was asked why he came to Inter.

“Because of the project at the club,” the Belgian told the official Inter website.

“I think Inter is a club with a lot of upsides. I think for me it was something I needed, a challenge where I could help a team build for the future.

“For me, everything is present here to help me and I wish I can help my team-mates with my hard work and dedication to the game.

“Taking it one day at a time, hopefully with a good result at the end of the season.”

Conte had been trying to sign Lukaku at Juventus and Chelsea, so how important was his presence in this decision?

“A lot. For me, like I said, he’s the best manager in the world. He’s somebody that can make players better all the time. You can see his record.

“I also want to thank President Steven Zhang and Giuseppe Marotta for the confidence in me, to get me here as well, and I’m really delighted to join this beautiful club.”

Lukaku has been given the Number 9 jersey, which for the last six years had been worn by Mauro Icardi.
