Lopetegui: Modric staying at Madrid

Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has insisted that Luka Modric will not join Inter this summer. “We’ve enjoyed having him and we’ll continue to do so.”

Luciano Spalletti admitted on Saturday that Inter were ‘dreaming’ of luring Modric to San Siro, just weeks after Cristiano Ronaldo left Madrid for Juventus, despite Blancos chief Florentino Perez slapping a €750m valuation on the midfielder.

However, Lopetegui said after his side’s 3-1 win against the Bianconeri in the International Champions Cup: “The President’s already given an answer, I don’t have much else to add.

“Modric’s an extraordinary player, we await him with open arms. I talked to him after his excellent World Cup and we’ll see if he can play on August 15 [in the European Super Cup], our first big objective of the season.

“I told him he was a player I’m passionate about, I love him and he knows it. He’ll be happy with the proposal he receives here.

“He’ll be happy to play football, like he already was, at Real Madrid. Luka is a Madrid player and will continue to be, I have no doubt.

“We’ve enjoyed having him and we’ll continue to do so.”
