Juventus director explains January transfer strategy amid Phillips links

Juventus are reportedly ready to meet Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips, and the Bianconeri director Giovanni Manna confirms the Serie A giants will ‘evaluate opportunities’ in the January transfer window.

The Bianconeri are expected to sign midfield reinforcements in the winter transfer window following the suspensions of Paul Pogba and Nicolò Fagioli.

Several sources report Manchester City midfielder Phillips is among the Serie A giants’ targets, although Manchester United have also been linked with the English midfielder.

“We are evaluating opportunities, but the search is not spasmodic,” Juventus director Manna said during an event in Turin on Monday.

“We thought we would have relied on Pogba and Fagioli, but we have endured the situation, the coach has been excellent and the players have always been ready.”

Juventus currently sit second in the Serie A table, just two points below Inter. Nevertheless, Massimiliano Allegri and Cristiano Giuntoli have maintained that the Bianconeri’s main target is to qualify for the Champions League this season.

“The coach and Giuntoli have already revealed our target, which is to reach a Champions League placement,” insisted Manna.

“Of course, we are Juventus, so we must compete at the highest levels in every competition. We are doing well, we are focused on our targets. We will focus on one game at a time and be ready at all times.”

Juventus have the second-best defence in the league, with nine goals conceded in 15 matches; only Inter have fewer with seven.

The Bianconeri secured a 1-0 win over Napoli at the Allianz Stadium this past Friday and will visit Genoa in the next league game on December 15.
