Italy star Chiesa warned he must wait for Liverpool debut

Italy international Federico Chiesa will probably not be in the Liverpool squad against Manchester United, confirmed manager Arne Slot.

The winger made the transfer from Juventus on Thursday and was hoping to make his debut in the Premier League on Sunday at Old Trafford.

However, Slot put the brakes on that idea when speaking to the media this morning.

“He’s going to train with us today but it’s a bigger chance that he is not in the squad for Sunday than he is,” said Slot in a press conference.

“If injuries might come up in the upcoming two days we might need him, but I don’t expect him to be in, but I cannot guarantee this.”

No games for Chiesa since Euros

Chiesa has not participated in any pre-season games with Juventus after playing for Italy at EURO 2024 and was excluded from training with the main squad too, as his contract battle with the club wore on.

His deal with Juve had been due to expire at the end of this season and he was not offered a new one, so they had to sell this summer to avoid losing him as a free agent.

This is why the Bianconeri eventually accepted the small fee of €12m plus another €3m in add-ons, having spent €60m to sign him from Fiorentina.

Chiesa turns 27 in October and has suffered from numerous injury problems, with repeated muscular issues never really allowing him to regain the form he had before the anterior cruciate ligament tear in January 2022.
