Italian newspapers’ verdict on Lukaku’s performance against Inter

Roma striker Romelu Lukaku was the worst player on the pitch against Inter, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport and other Italian sports papers: ‘He got everything wrong.’

The Belgian forward returned to San Siro on Sunday and didn’t receive a warm welcome as Inter fans waited for him with 40,000 whistles, while his former teammates, including Lautaro Martinez, ignored the Belgian in his first game as an opponent against the Benamata.

The Giallorossi suffered a 1-0 loss, seeing Lukaku’s heir at Inter, Marcus Thuram, score the winner in the second half.

La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Fabio Licari was quite harsh on the Chelsea loanee who received the lowest rating alongside Nicola Zalewski. Both players were rated 4.5/10.

‘It could have been the effect of boos or just a bad night, but it’s rare to see such a poor Lukaku performance in Italy. He got everything wrong,’ wrote the Gazzetta dello Sport journalist.

The Belgium international was the worst player on the pitch for Corriere dello Sport as well, although other Roma players were rated 5/10: Zalewski and Rasmus Kristensen.

Corriere dello Sport journalist Pietro Guadagno wrote that Lukaku ‘was affected’ by boos from Inter fans but partially justified the 30-year-old saying that his Roma teammates ‘didn’t help him much.’

Tuttosport wrote that Francesco Acerbi ‘nullified’ Lukaku, who ‘didn’t touch the ball except for a pass to Stephan El Shaarawy.’ Lukaku was rated 4.5/10 by the Turin-based paper.
