Higher summer 2023 spenders and earners in Serie A

Looking back on the summer transfer window in Serie A, some clubs invested heavily to bolster their squads whilst others generated millions in profit from sales.

Italian sides spent over €800m combined on players this summer, seeing over 230 officially switch teams, whilst over €970m were generated in sales, with over 500 officially departing their clubs.

The Serie A title race has continued to heat up in recent years and four different teams have now won the last four Scudetti, creating an atmosphere where the slightest advantage could pay dividends come May.

At the end of the summer 2023 transfer window, which team spent the most and which generated the most in sales?

Luxury in Milan

Milan started the summer transfer window by selling boyhood fan and local hero Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United for around €70-80m, causing concern amongst fans following their disappointing fourth place finish in Serie A.

Two months later, the general sentiment amongst Rossoneri supporters has changed. The club have worked incredibly hard to strengthen Stefano Pioli’s squad, signing a long list of players including Christian Pulisic, Samuel Chukwueze and Yunus Musah.

Milan spent over €112m across the last two months, instantly reinvesting the money from Tonali’s sale to try and take Pioli’s squad back to the top in Serie A.

Boutique in Bergamo

Down the road in Lombardy, millions were flowing in a different direction for Atalanta, who further strengthened their reputation for developing youth talent and pulling off smart business by generating over €155m in sales this summer.

La Dea’s most high-profile sale was Rasmus Hojlund, who left after a single season to join Manchester United in a deal worth around €75m plus €10m in add-ons. Other impressive deals were Merih Demiral’s €20m move to Al-Ahli and Jeremie Boga’s €18m transfer to Nice.

Atalanta did reinvest some of this money, picking up El Bilal Toure from Almeria for around €28m and Gianluca Scamacca from West Ham for €25m plus add-ons, and they’ll be dreaming of a top four finish in Serie A this season.
