Giroud confident of making Milan derby after ankle injury

Olivier Giroud explained the ankle injury he suffered in France’s win over Ireland and suggested he’s ‘not too worried’ ahead of the fast-approaching Derby della Madonnina.

The 36-year-old Milan striker was forced off the pitch in the 26th minute of Les Bleus’ Euro 2024 qualifier, looking pained as he clutched his left ankle. After coming off the pitch, he could be spotted holding an ice pack to the injury on the bench.

Giroud has started all three of Milan’s opening Serie A fixtures this season, netting four goals, and his injury caused immediate concern amongst the Rossoneri faithful.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport from the mixed zone of the Parc des Princes, Giroud first provided the context to his ankle injury.

“I made a strange movement on the same ankle on which I had taken a knock in the Champions League against Napoli from Kim. At the moment I have a weakness, which is manageable, it hadn’t hurt for weeks.

“I wanted to continue, but the ankle told me to stop. But now I’m already better, I’m not too worried. Tomorrow, I’ll go for some tests. But not too bad. It’s a pity, because I wanted to play, but it’s better to stop.”

The 36-year-old was then asked if he’d be able to take part in the upcoming Milan derby, which’ll take place on September 16.

“Yes yes, I think I can make it.”

Last season, Giroud saw over 3200 minutes of action across 47 total appearances for Milan. In that time, he netted 18 goals and provided seven assists.
