Genoa work to keep Strootman

Kevin Strootman has impressed at Genoa, who are working to secure a permanent move for the Dutch international.

The 31-year-old moved on loan to the Grifone from Olympique Marseille in January 2021, but his contract with the Ligue 1 side expires in June 2023.

Genoa don’t have an option to buy the former Roma midfielder, but Il Secolo XIX claims the club is working hard to confirm a permanent deal this summer.

The player has a €4m-a-year contract with Marseille, something that could prove to be an obstacle for the Ligurians, but the player doesn’t want to return to France.

Marseille are also interested in getting rid of his heavy salary and could let him move on a free transfer.

The newspaper reports Genoa could try to sign him on a new two or three-year-deal, to spread the €4m salary across his time in Genoa.
