Milan today officially confirmed the sacking of Vincenzo Montella, with Primavera Coach Gennaro Gattuso replacing him.
The 39-year-old is a firm favourite of the San Siro crowd, having spent 13 years as a player with the Rossoneri.
However, the former midfielder’s Coaching career has been patchy at best, as he takes charge of the biggest job of his career.

The 39-year-old is a firm favourite of the San Siro crowd, having spent 13 years as a player with the Rossoneri.
However, the former midfielder’s Coaching career has been patchy at best, as he takes charge of the biggest job of his career.
On February 25, 2013 Gattuso was appointed as the player-Coach of Swiss side FC Sion, whom he had joined from Milan that summer.
Having taken charge for a month which featured one win, a draw and two defeats; Gattuso worked alongside Arno Rossini, who had the requisite UEFA Pro Licence.
In total Gattuso was involved in 12 games as Coach and alongside Rossini, with three wins, four draws and five defeats. The pair were sacked at the end of the 2012-13 season.
Ringhio then took charge of Palermo, but he was sacked after just six Serie B games which brought two wins, a draw and three defeats, with a 2-1 loss at Bari the final straw.
Giuseppe Iachini replaced him and secured promotion for the Rosanero by winning the division.
On June 5, 2014 Gattuso was back in the hotseat, taking over Greek Super League side OFI Crete.
The club was in financial difficulty though, and the Italian resigned on October 26, stating “I cannot continue to carry this situation on my shoulders alone.”
The following day, however, Gattuso reversed his decision after a show of support from the club’s fans.
In December of that same year though he once again resigned, leaving with a record of 17 games, five wins, three draws and nine defeats.
In January 2015 Gattuso applied for the manager’s job at Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical, and was also linked with the vacancy at Rangers, one of his former clubs.
However, it was Lega Pro side Pisa with whom he restarted his Coaching career in August 2015.
Gattuso guided the Torre to second place in Group B of the Lega Pro, before beating Pordenone and Foggia in the play-offs to reach Serie B.
The following summer once again saw Gattuso walk away, complaining of “serious, constant and unacceptable club problems”.
A month later he returned to the post, but his fears were well founded as Pisa were deducted four points over the season for financial irregularities.
Gattuso’s side boasted a fantastic defensive record, conceding just 36 goals in 42 games, a record bettered only be Spezia.
Unfortunately for Pisa though, they scored just 23 in that time and drew 21 games while winning just six.
Gattuso left at the end of the season to become Milan’s Primavera Coach, but he was today promoted to the top job.
His career total so far makes for unconvincing reading, with a win percentage of just 32.77 across 119 games.
However, it must be noted that both OFI Crete and Pisa had serious financial problems, while being sacked by Palermo is pretty much a rite of passage for any up and coming Italian Coach.
With Gattuso only likely to be in charge until the end of the season, Milan fans will hope his fiery style can at least bring a short-term uptick in results.
