Galliani: ‘I had signed Xavi at Milan’

Adriano Galliani reveals he had signed Xavi at Milan and compares the Barcelona coach to Monza’s new signing Stefano Sensi.

Galliani is one of the busiest directors in Serie A at the moment, having already secured deals to sign Alessio Cragno, Andrea Ranocchia, Stefano Sensi and Andrea Carboni, who will undergo his medical today.

Sensi will join the newly-promoted side on loan from Inter and Galliani seems quite excited about the deal.

“He will surely have successful medical. He will sign on Friday and become a new Monza player,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“He is a great player, I had tried to get Xavi in 1998, I had actually signed him, but his mother didn’t let him leave. Now I’ve signed Sensi.”

The Italy international spent the second part of 2021-22 on loan at Sampdoria after struggling with playing time under Simone Inzaghi at Inter. The 26-year-old scored one goal in nine appearances with the Blucerchiati.

Galliani also confirmed Monza’s interest in Matteo Pessina, Antonio Candreva and former Sassuolo defender Marlon, now at Shakhtar Donetsk.

“He [Marlon] is a player that we like, he is an excellent player, but the deal is difficult, I don’t think we’ll sign him. I like Candreva, but I would almost certainly exclude his signing.”

Monza earned their first-ever promotion to Serie A last season, beating Pisa in the Serie B play-off final. They are now building a competitive team, but Galliani has recently confirmed that their main target remains to avoid relegation to the second division.
