In a new medical update released by Fiorentina on Monday morning, the club says that Joe Barone’s ‘vital functions are supported by artificial mechanical support techniques’ and that ‘any prognostic prediction is currently out of place.’
“ACF Fiorentina can confirm that General Director Joe Barone remains hospitalized in the cardiac surgical intensive care unit of the San Raffaele hospital in Milan in critical clinical conditions following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest,” Fiorentina said in a statement on Monday morning.
“Vital functions are supported by artificial mechanical support techniques. Any prognostic prediction is currently out of place. The Barone family, the Commisso family and the whole of Fiorentina thank San Raffaele and all of Professor Zangrillo’s team for the work that was put in place from the first moment.”
What happened to Barone
Barone suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday afternoon, hours before a Serie A game against Atalanta. The match was called off and Barone was taken to the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan by helicopter.
His wife arrived at the hospital on Sunday evening, while his four children landed in Italy from New York on Monday morning.
Fiorentina had released the first statement about Barone on Monday night, saying that he was ‘receiving the most advanced treatment in cardiac function and support.’
Who is Joe Barone
Barone was appointed as Fiorentina’s general manager in 2019 when Rocco Commisso bought Fiorentina from the Della Valle family.
He is in charge of the club’s main aspects, from transfers to the youth sector. Born in Pozzallo, Sicily, in 1966, he moved with his family to Brooklyn, New York, at the age of eight. He also served as the New York Cosmos’ vice president.
