“How am I physically? There is still work to do but I hope to recover as soon as possible.

“My entire career has been marred by injuries, and last season was particularly bad for me. I want to make this my comeback season and do very well.

“My farewell in Turin is in the past now and is a closed matter for me, I am ready to do well at Genoa as we have a large squad and can achieve something good this season.”

The former Udinese defender, who has represented Italy since the age of 15, concluded by commenting on his former city rivals Juventus.

“How do you beat Juventus? The Bianconeri are a great team, the formation of [Antonio] Conte is binded by collective spirit and only when that is broken will they be beaten.”
