FC Porto fail to surpass legendary Milan unbeaten record

FC Porto have failed to beat the all-time 58-game unbeaten league record set by Milan, only managing to equal this extraordinary tally.

The Rossoneri originally achieved that run of 58 Serie A matches without defeat from May 1991 to March 1993, ended by a 1-0 home loss to Parma thanks to Faustino Asprilla’s goal.

It took two different coaches to oversee that streak, first Arrigo Sacchi and then Fabio Capello.

Porto had been able to equal the 58 games in the Portuguese league and were in a position to set a new record this evening against Sporting Braga.

However, Sergio Conceicao’s side were beaten 1-0 in Braga by a Ricardo Horta effort and at most have only been able to write their name alongside Milan in the history books.

Porto had not lost a Primeira Liga fixture since October 30, 2020, a 3-2 result against Paços Ferreira.

The previous Portuguese record had been 56 games unbeaten for Benfica.

Of course, when looking outside the top six European leagues, there are considerably longer dominant streaks, for example Steaua Bucharest’s 104 matches in Romania from June 1986 to September 1989.
