EDF: ‘Angry with Roma’

Eusebio Di Francesco was “angry” that Roma lost to Udinese after dominating possession and failing to take their chances.

They were ultimately beaten by a Rodrigo De Paul solo effort and would’ve been 2-0 down had Ignacio Pussetto’s goal not been disallowed for handball.

“When you have almost 80 per cent possession in the first half, what you lack is determination to finish the game,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We cannot afford to hold the game in our hands for 60 minutes and concede on a throw-in.

“We dominated the match, had many opportunities to make it count, yet are here again licking our wounds. It was a strong performance everywhere except the final third, where we didn’t finish our chances.

“It’s not an issue of bad luck so much as lacking belief in ourselves. I cannot say Roma didn’t put Udinese on the ropes, but there are other areas where we are lacking and give the opposition more confidence they can do well, such as allowing dangerous counter-attacks.

“A team that dominated for an hour has to score a goal. It has to. A team that wants to become big and strong has to make that level of possession and pressure count, that is what makes me angry.

“Evidently, we haven’t yet matured enough and we’re working on it. I saw many interesting things today, but the details make the difference.

“On the throw-in for the goal, we made three or four mistakes in a row. The defenders, midfielders and forwards all have to be more alert on these situations.

“It angers me because the team showed it had an identity and played some good football, but returning home with zero points is disappointing.”

This is the third game of the season where Roma have dropped valuable points on the eve of a Champions League match.

Real Madrid, who they face at the Olimpico on Tuesday, incredibly lost 3-0 to Eibar in La Liga today.

“I don’t think that is the case. I said this was the most important match and I meant it. We had to face it with the right determination and maturity.

“I don’t want to compare Real Madrid’s performance to ours, as these are different situations, but evidently we need to work differently. We tried to raise the bar and unfortunately didn’t manage it.”
