Barcelona’s late penalty appeal against Inter was ignored although Denzel Dumfries appeared to touch the ball with his hand inside the box.
The Dutch full-back prevented Ansu Fati from reaching the ball in the final minutes of tonight’s Champions League clash at San Siro, but Barcelona were not awarded a penalty kick despite a ‘silent’ VAR check.
Dumfries touched the ball with his hand inside the box, but referee Slavko Vincic was not urged by his VAR officials to have an on-field review to judge for himself, despite a very long check.
There was some confusion, partly because it seems the clearest camera angle was only at the disposal of Spanish television and not the VAR.
It comes after Juventus had a valid goal disallowed against Salernitana because the VAR did not have the camera angle to show Antonio Candreva keeping everyone onside.
Xavi seemed not happy at the touchline and vented his frustration after the final whistle.
“I am furious and outraged by the situation we had to experience. There is no word for this other than an outrage,” he told Spanish reporters after the game.
“It is an injustice. I already said yesterday that referees need to explain their decisions. We don’t understand what was happening. The referees need to speak, it will help to humanise them as well as clarify things.”
